Digital Halloween Insights

Autumn’s first chill and drifts of fallen leaves are sure signs that October is upon us and the pull of Halloween is felt by Canadian kids, and kids at heart. This year the average household with children will spend an average of $75 on costumes, decorations and treats making Halloween our second largest spending holiday of the year. In preparation consumers will go online to search for inspiration before they spend $1.5B, and they’ll start even earlier than ever.
Curious about what Canadians will be doing to celebrate Halloween? So were we, so we conducted a survey, did a little research, and discovered some
interesting insights
.
Over 20% of Canadians planning on dressing up and the internet is where 40% will turn for costume ideas, more than from traditional media (TV, Magazines) and even friends & family. Popular costumes run the gambit from traditional (pirate, ghost, witch) to pop-culture driven (
Breaking Bad
,
Game of Thrones
,
Katy Perry’s Roar
, and even
fox
costumes inspired by “
What does the fox say?
”).
Decorating with ghostly displays and glowing pumpkins are a traditional part of the holiday and 34% of us will be participating. Video is becoming an increasingly important way to find
DIY instructions
and
creative ideas
. YouTube has over 14M
Halloween themed videos
including makeup application and
pumpkin carving tips
& techniques.
Halloween is also a sweet celebration as almost 2/3rds of Canadians plan on giving out treats to the over 3M trick-or-treat aged kids who may be knocking on their doors. Most will be offering chocolate, 32%, with chips and candy the next two most popular goodies.
