G(irls)20 Summit: The world’s highest potential resource is not what you think
Monday, June 17, 2013
When we talk about natural resources that fuel the world, the conversation usually turns to gas and minerals, or sun and wind.
But it’s hard to miss the highest potential resource all around us – the 3.5 billion girls and women around the world.
Today, in Moscow, Russia,
21 young women
are representing their G20 countries at the annual
G(irls)20 Summit
to tackle the economic challenges facing our global community around the themes of jobs, growth and investment.
Held in advance of the official
G20 Leaders Summit
, the Summit brings together these delegates over the next four days to discuss strategies for sustainability, youth employment, and achieving the full participation of women in the economy through the eradication of early forced marriage, alongside leading figures like
Arianna Huffington
,
Lauren Bush Lauren
and
Jennifer Buffett
.
Technology plays a big part in empowering young women across the globe – accelerating change, connecting communities, and providing new platforms for education and outreach. At Google, we’re proud to have been a partner of the G(irls)20 Summit over the past four years, and delighted this year to be hosting the Summit at
Google Moscow
, where for the first time, delegates to the Summit will be using Google Hangouts to connect with guest speakers from around the world.
But the conversation only begins around the table in Moscow – everyone can tune into the Summit livestream at
www.girls20summit.com
or on YouTube at
www.youtube.com/Girls20Summit/
.
Add your voice to the chorus of people and organizations who believe in the incredible potential of the 3.5 billion girls and women in our midst, and together, we can turn ideas into action.

Ladies Learning Code includes Google in their March Break activities
Wednesday, March 13, 2013
Google’s Canada’s Women@Google hosted a groups of 40 girls who were part of a March Break camp with Toronto non-profit organization
Ladies Learning Code
yesterday. It was great to see such enthusiasm and interest in technology from this group of girls. They had some informed questions for our panel that lead to an interesting discussion about cloud technology, YouTube trends, UI design and how to get hired at Google.
The girls were among some of the first to experience the new
Google Pixel
, not yet available in Canada.

Hack for Her: A Day Hack in Honour of International Women's Day
Friday, March 8, 2013
We’re excited to be celebrating
International Women’s Day
here at Google Canada, especially because of the remarkable contributions women have made to technology - from
Ada Lovelace
to
Anita Borg
. It’s always a time for us to recognize how Google and our products are at their best when they reflect the diversity, perspectives, ideas and cultures of all our users. That’s one of the reasons we continue to make considerable efforts to ensure an inclusive workplace, with tailored programs and policies to give women the tools to pursue their dreams and continue to change the world.
This year, in the spirit of innovation,
Google Waterloo
is excited to partner with
Girls in Tech
,
Girl Geeks
and
Women & Tech
to recognize International Women’s Day here in Canada. Together, we’re going to do something cool that matters on a global scale: on
Wednesday, March 13th
, Girls in Tech in Singapore will present an issue facing South East Asian women, and our attendees will be broken out in collaborative groups to “hack” a technical solution. A panel of noteworthy judges will be giving feedback and choosing a winning idea, with the hope of one day bringing it to a reality.
This all-day event will begin with an welcome from
Susan Truppe
, M.P. for London North Centre and the Parliamentary Secretary for Status of Women. It will be followed by a day of hacking and presentations of the ideas generated, and will end with an awards ceremony. Ideas will be shared via our
Life@Google G+
page post-event!

Girl Rising: A spotlight on young women around the world
Thursday, March 7, 2013
Tonight, on the eve of
International Women’s Day
, Toronto is getting the first chance to see the new film by Academy Award-nominated director Richard E. Robbins,
Girl Rising
, hosted by the
G(irls)20 Summit
and Google Canada, and featuring special guest host
Marci Ien
of Canada AM.
Telling the stories of 9 young women from Peru, Haiti, Egypt, Sierre Leone, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, India, Nepal and Cambodia, the film looks at some of the most challenging circumstances facing women and girls in the world today.
Brought to life with narration by some of our most celebrated actresses including
Cate Blanchett
,
Anne Hathaway
,
Salma Hayek
and
Meryl Streep
, the film also features
Freida Pinto
and
Liam Neeson
, and the spectacular musical talents of Oscar-winning composers Rachel Portman and Hans Zimmer.
Having previewed at
Sundance
earlier this year, the film itself is a project of
10x10
– a coalition of journalists, NGOs, grassroots organizations, policy makers and corporate partners, united in their work to champion girls’ advancement and education. With production funded in part through support from
Google
, 10x10 worked with a renowned writer from each of the countries featured in the film to craft the nine inspiring stories captured onscreen.
With International Women’s Day right around the corner, we hope you have a chance to see
Girl Rising
and celebrate the passion behind the drive to ensure access to education for young women the world over.
Congratulations to 10x10, executive producer Holly Gordon, the whole production team behind
Girl Rising
, and to the G(irls)20 Summit for their work in bringing this film to Toronto!

Women@Google: Talking Tech with the Ad Women of Toronto
Wednesday, November 21, 2012
With women making up only
25% of technology related fields
, there is a tremendous opportunity for women to join and build careers in the technology industry.
This past week, 80 members of
Ad Women of Toronto
visited Google’s new Toronto office to explore the topic of “Women & Technology.”
Women@Google hosted a panel with five heavy-hitters from the Canadian tech industry with backgrounds ranging from project management and sales finance to advertising and software engineering. Entrepreneur
Elaine Kunda
, tech leader and consultant
Michelle Nanjad
, and
Mavis Huntley
, head of integrated production at
john st.
, joined Google’s Melissa Dominguez (tech lead for Gmail iOS) and Natasha Walji (head of sales finance for Canada) for a great discussion of the opportunities and challenges women can face in the tech and business worlds.
The panelists explored the shortage of women in STEM careers, the journey to C-level positions, the importance of mentors, and the perceived barriers women in technology sometimes face and how they can be overcome. In response to the much debated question of how women can best achieve a work/life balance, the panelists agreed that there is no singular path to happiness or success. But strong support networks were often a factor. For every woman who appears to “
have it all
,” there’s often supportive partners, family members, child care providers and communities that help her succeed.
The evening closed with a reflection on our connection to technology and how, in its various forms, technology can be used to increase the education and economic development of women and girls – not just in Canada, but across the globe.

Women@Google: Empowering young women to make a difference with the G(irls)20 Summit Ambassador Action Fund
Wednesday, October 10, 2012
Imagine if the leaders of 21 most powerful nations were run by whip smart, tech-savvy 18 to 20 year-old young women who want to change the world. Welcome to the
G(irls)20 Summit
.
Each year,
21 delegates
are chosen to represent their countries at a mini G20 summit in advance of the
G20 Leaders Summit
. The agenda focuses on the economic empowerment of girls and women to address challenges in emerging and developed countries. The delegates then present a
communique
outlining their ideas to the real G20 Leaders and return home to put their ideas into action.
Women@Google has been globally involved in this initiative since the inception. Centrally coordinated by the Canadian team, we have hosted workshops for the delegates in Toronto, Paris &
Mexico City
, sharing ways to communicate their message by leveraging technology.
This year we launched the
G(irls)20 Summit Ambassador Action Fund
and today we are pleased to announce the
first five projects
that will receive funding and support. Over 40 Googlers worldwide have mentored applicants and will help the recipients bring their ideas to life.
A team of volunteers in Kenya who fight for women's health
For Tanvi Giotra, this funding will support
Project En Route
- which connects girls in low-income classrooms in India with access to computers to connect them to the wider world. Or for Kartika Nurhayati in Indonesia, this will help support BookMob, a mobile public library that promotes the tools for literacy in underserved areas.
Former World Bank President, Robert Zoellick once said, "improved economic opportunities for women lead to better outcomes for families, societies and countries." Stay tuned for the next G(irls)20 Summit in Russia, in 2013.

Women@Google: Let’s share our stories
Monday, September 24, 2012
We often hear how helpful it is in business to trade stories and make connections. One of the things that has helped me navigate the twists and turns of my career to date has been talking to other women in business about their personal and professional journeys.
Today, much of the conversation around women in business revolves around the trade-offs instead of the helpful stories on the
how
.
How people have made choices along their journeys? How they have integrated having children with demanding careers? How they have been inspired by their work in the community? How they have enlisted a team to support them?
I recently had the opportunity to share my own journey that brought me to Google with
Women of Influence Magazine
. One of the areas that has inspired me the most at my time at Google has been supporting and developing female talent. We now have three active chapters of Women@Google in Canada to support the advancement of women by offering professional and personal development, connecting Googlers around the world and combining our efforts to make a positive impact in the wider community.
In the coming months, you’ll see a Women@Google feature here, on the Google Canada blog, as we report back on events, look at exciting work that’s happening in the community and talk to remarkable women of all ages. We hope that sharing stories like these will help stir up new ideas and inspire other women to share their own journeys.
