Google Canada’s Back-to-School Trends Report
Wednesday, July 29, 2015
Ahhh, summer. Time to shop for bathing suits, beach towels and… backpacks? That’s right. July is almost over and it’s
already time to start shopping for school
. But before they step inside a store, today’s back-to-school shoppers do their homework, heading online to find out what trends are hot, where to get them, and how to get the best deals.
And where are we getting inspiration for what to buy? A quarter of Canadian university students saying that they go to YouTube to find out what’s cool to purchase. In fact, Canadian searches for “back to school” on YouTube
grew 67% last year, and
this year we’ve seen a 120% growth in watchtime of back-to-school videos globally.
It’s only July, and we’ve already seen twice as many back to school videos posted on YouTube as last year, including perennial favourites like
hair tutorials
and
dorm room tours
, along with rising trends like
nail art
(which we’ve already watched 2 million hours of on YouTube this year!)
So what items are likely to be on Canadians’ back-to-school shopping list? We looked at search trends year-over-year and
identified three distinct patterns:
Rising stars
- you can think of these as fast fashion trends, they’re things that get really hot quickly, but
can
fizzle out; we’re searching for them a lot.
Seasonal Growth
- these are trends that last for several seasons, they have staying power; these searches are steadily increasing year-over-year.
Seasonal Decline
- these are trends that are slowly on their way out; we’re searching less for them now than we used to.
Canada’s Back-to-School Hot (and Not) List
Happy shopping!

A Year in Canadian Search: Google Zeitgeist 2013
Tuesday, December 17, 2013
Rob Ford, Nelson Mandela and Harlem Shake make Canada’s 2013 trending list
From controversy at Toronto’s City Hall to “sourtoe cocktails,” “twerking” and doing the Harlem Shake, Google Canada’s Year End Zeitgeist offers a uniquely
Canuck
perspective on the year's major events and hottest trends based on searches from Canada.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford made headlines around the world and topped this year’s trending searches here in Canada. The untimely passing of Glee star and Calgary-native Cory Monteith and the celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life captured Canadians’ attention, as did the news of the Royal Baby’s arrival across the pond. There were over 1.7 million videos about the Harlem Shake uploaded to YouTube this year, and this Internet meme had no trouble dancing its way into the

Looking at the list of the
Top 10 Trending Canadians
, in 2013 we were star-struck by Commander Chris Hadfield and celebrated the amazing achievements of author and Nobel laureate, Alice Munro. Canada also lost two legends of Canadian music, Stompin’ Tom Connors and Rita MacNeil who clearly left their mark in Canadian culture.

“Twerk” got an entry in the

this year, so it’s hardly surprising that “what is twerking” and “how to twerk” topped Canada’s

Moving from your desktop to a four-screen world
Thursday, January 24, 2013
With the growing use of smartphones and tablets, is the desktop computer as we know it, dead? That’s the question
BNN’s Tony Keller
asked his guests on the channel’s afternoon flagship show,
Headline
.
Rory Capern, Google Canada’s strategic partnerships lead, was on the air to challenge the premise, discussing how what’s actually happening is the evolution to a four-screen world, where consumers are constantly connected and moving between their desktop, tablet, TV and smartphone depending on where they are and what they’re doing.
In the four-screen world, what matters is creating platforms that let consumers move seamlessly between the screens they want to use, and understanding how having four screens is changing our behaviour – like the 77% of TV viewers who just can’t get enough of one screen and now use a second screen at the same time, surfing or sharing while they watch.
