How not to get tricked: Your favourite online safety tips
Thursday, October 31, 2013
Cross-posted from the
Official Google Blog
Whether it’s defending yourself from identity thieves or removing bad software from your family’s computer, it’s important to know how to stay safe online. Over the course of the past few months, we’ve explored
the simple steps you can take
to help keep yourself, your family and the web safer. And in celebration of October's National Cyber Security Awareness Month, for the past 30 days we’ve posted a daily tip on how to
#staysafe
online.
Even though our favourite month of the year is about to end, it’s good to know how to stay safe all year round. Here are the top five most popular tips from the month:
Add 2-step verification to keep the bad guys out of your Google account.
Use a password to secure your router.
Avoid malware—review permissions and ratings before installing a new app.
Think before you share.
Learn how to locate and remote wipe your mobile device in case it’s lost or stolen.
Security and privacy are important and Google provides
tools
to help you protect yourself and your information. For example,
2-Step Verification
adds another layer of security to your Google Account.
Google+ Circles
and
YouTube settings
help you control what you share and keep your information private if you want to keep it to yourself.
Verify Apps
helps protect your phone from malware, and
Android Device Manager
will ring your phone and locate it on a map to help you find your device if you lose it (and remotely delete your information from the device if you can’t get it back).

The Canadian Creators Collab Callout - Today's post brought to you by the letter "C"
Tuesday, October 29, 2013
Calling all Canadian YouTube creators! We have an exciting development program that we are kicking off - the
Canadian Creator Collab Callout
!
Collaborating with other YouTube creators can be one of the most effective ways to unlock creativity and to tap new audiences.
So here’s the deal, tell us a YouTube collaboration idea that you and your other Canadian content creators have on
this application form
(applications close November 29th). Selected applicants will receive training on best practices in optimizations, audience development, AND some valuable access to professional studio time and equipment to film their collaboration idea.
To be eligible, you need to be Canadian and have at least 100 subscribers on each of the channels applying. And remember, it's not cool to submit a collaboration idea that includes another channel unless of course the owner of that channel is on board and wants to be a part of the application.
Here are some examples of really great collaborations we’ve seen:
WOTE and KRNFX -
I knew you were trouble
Lindsey Stirling and many other creators (mysteryguitarman, shaytards, freddiew) -
Come with us
minutephysics and Vsauce -
What if the earth were hollow
YouTube Comedy Week -
The YouTube Challenge Challenge
Ray Willliam Johnson and Sarah Silverman -
The meaning of life
Don’t forget the YouTube
Creator Playbook
has some great tips and information about getting started if you are looking for best practices and strategies to help build your audience on YouTube.
Submissions close November 29th, 2013. More information about the program guidelines can be read
here
! Looking forward to receiving your
application
.
Update: Creators can submit multiple collaboration ideas as long as each is paired with a different set of channels.

Digital Halloween Insights
Tuesday, October 29, 2013
Autumn’s first chill and drifts of fallen leaves are sure signs that October is upon us and the pull of Halloween is felt by Canadian kids, and kids at heart. This year the average household with children will spend an average of $75 on costumes, decorations and treats making Halloween our second largest spending holiday of the year. In preparation consumers will go online to search for inspiration before they spend $1.5B, and they’ll start even earlier than ever.
Curious about what Canadians will be doing to celebrate Halloween? So were we, so we conducted a survey, did a little research, and discovered some
interesting insights
.
Over 20% of Canadians planning on dressing up and the internet is where 40% will turn for costume ideas, more than from traditional media (TV, Magazines) and even friends & family. Popular costumes run the gambit from traditional (pirate, ghost, witch) to pop-culture driven (
Breaking Bad
,
Game of Thrones
,
Katy Perry’s Roar
, and even
fox
costumes inspired by “
What does the fox say?
”).
Decorating with ghostly displays and glowing pumpkins are a traditional part of the holiday and 34% of us will be participating. Video is becoming an increasingly important way to find
DIY instructions
and
creative ideas
. YouTube has over 14M
Halloween themed videos
including makeup application and
pumpkin carving tips
& techniques.
Halloween is also a sweet celebration as almost 2/3rds of Canadians plan on giving out treats to the over 3M trick-or-treat aged kids who may be knocking on their doors. Most will be offering chocolate, 32%, with chips and candy the next two most popular goodies.
Find out more about what Canadians are planning and enjoy other Halloween inspired data in our new Canada Insights |

Have a safe and happy Halloween from your friends at Google Canada.

Helping Small Businesses grow their businesses on the web
Wednesday, October 23, 2013
In Canada,
5.1 million Canadians
– nearly half of our workforce – work in small businesses. With more than
1.2 million small- and medium-sized businesses
in Canada last year, representing over 99 per cent of all businesses in Canada, SMBs are a vital part of a growing economy.
But as many small business owners know, they are used to being pressed: for resources, for time, and especially for credit. Juggling expenses and managing seasonal business spikes and valleys doesn’t leave much room for other spending, like investing in a new equipment or spending time growing your presence on the web.
Starting today, and in recognition of Canada’s Small Business Week, we’re going to make it a little easier for Canadian businesses to grow their businesses online. Teaming up with RBC Royal Bank, we’re launching
AdWords Business Credit
in Canada, offering small and medium-sized business a credit card specifically for AdWords that will help them pay for their AdWords campaigns and track their spending.
For over a decade, AdWords has helped businesses of all sizes grow – by helping promote local businesses to the millions of people that search the web everyday for information about their favorite restaurant, their next purchase, or the service providers they need for their cars, their homes, their work.
As
Tom Hutchinson
, Google’s Vice-President Finance, explains: “We’ve consistently heard from small businesses that affordable access to credit is an important piece in growing their online presence, and ultimately, growing their business.”
“Small businesses need to be visible where consumers choose to be, so investing in an online presence is fundamental to attracting new customers and staying competitive,” says
Richard Thomas
, head, Business Credit Cards, RBC. “With AdWords Business Credit, business owners can capitalize on the benefits of online advertising, while freeing up cash flow.”
Here are a few details about the cards:
In Canada, AdWords Business Credit will have an 11.99% interest rate, with no annual fees.
RBC Royal Bank will be issuing the MasterCard.
AdWords Business Credit can only be used for online AdWords advertising purchases.
AdWords Business Credit comes to Canada after successful programs in the US and UK, where feedback from participating businesses has been overwhelmingly positive. In Canada, nearly half of small business owners we surveyed reported that they had to restrict AdWords campaigns to fund other business expenses, and half reported experiencing cash flow issues that could be improved with better access to credit. That’s where AdWords Business Credit can make a difference to these SMBs.
So if you’re a small business looking to grow your business online, be sure to have a look at these helpful resources:
Google’s
guide for small businesses
looking to start an AdWords campaign
Take Google’s short
Online Marketing 101
course to learn the basics of online advertising
Our Google Partners program to help you
find a trusted online expert
to help your business
Every day, AdWords enables more than one million businesses connect with their customers online. We hope that as part of these resources,
AdWords Business Credit
will give Canadian businesses more flexibility—some ‘extra credit’—so they're able to focus on growing their businesses even further.

If you could invent anything, what would it be? Doodle 4 Google launches in Canada for the first time
Friday, October 11, 2013
Doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists. We have a great team of doodlers that design the doodles day to day, the fun and popular
doodles
you have come to know and love, but this time we wanted to hand the paintbrush and pencil crayons over to the most creative folks we know - Canadian students.
Today, we are excited to announce the launch of the first annual Doodle 4 Google contest in Canada. Open to students K-12 in Canada, Doodle 4 Google is an opportunity to design the doodle for the Google.ca homepage where millions of people will see it. The overall winning artist will also take home a $10,000 scholarship and a $10,000 grant for their school.
At Google we like to think big, and in the spirit of thinking big, our theme for the competition is “
If I could invent anything, I would invent...
” We’re asking everyone to test the limits of their imagination and dream up a doodle that represents whatever this theme means to you -- from a brand new innovation or futuristic idea, to something that would make the world a better place. The possibilities are endless.
Participation is easy – download the entry form at
google.ca/doodle4google
, then print it, design your doodle and submit.
Submissions close on December 31st
, so get started and have fun!
The judging will begin with Googlers and a panel of guest judges including: astronaut and former International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield, film & television actress Karine Vanasse, Royal Ontario Museum CEO Janet Carding, and Ann Makosinski, winner of the 2013 Google Science Fair, and a young inventor herself.
The top 25 regional winners will be flown to Toronto for an awards ceremony on February 25th and be featured in a special exhibit at the
Royal Ontario Museum
, but we will be asking you to help us pick the top 5 national finalists in an online vote open to all Canadians early in the New Year in a public vote online, so stay tuned for more updates.

Time to back away from the cookie jar? Introducing nutrition info in search
Thursday, October 3, 2013
Figuring out how to make smart choices about some of our favorite foods can often be a cumbersome and daunting process. So we’re hoping we can make those choices a little bit easier: starting today you will be able to quickly and easily find extensive nutrition information for over 1,000 fruits, vegetables, meats and meals in search. From the basics of potatoes and carrots to more complex dishes like burritos and chow mein, you can simply ask, “How much protein is in a banana?” or “How many calories are in an avocado?” and get your answer right away.
You'll hear the answer to your specific question
, see relevant nutrition information under an expansion, and be able to switch to other related foods or serving sizes.
This new nutritional information builds on our work on the Knowledge Graph, which brings together all kinds of information from across the web that wasn't easily accessible. The graph helps us connect things that are related, even in cases when those foods have a completely different sounding name from what you asked. For example, when you ask for “summer squash carbs”, we include “zucchini” as a relevant food in the dropdown, because it is a type of summer squash.
Here are a few examples:
Tempted by some popcorn at the movies? Ask “how many calories are in popcorn” and you’ll get your answer. [Hint: it's 31 calories per cup]
Perplexed by a food label or recipe? Ask “what nutrients are in breadfruit?” or “is there sugar in granadilla?”
Big on a high protein diet? Ask “how many carbs in corn?” or simply search for [corn] and you’ll see detailed nutrition info.
This feature just launched in Canada and, over time, we’ll be adding more features and more foods! So tap the microphone, give the feature a spin, and soon explore and discover the ins and outs of over 1,000 of your favorite foods.
