Google Maps brings Street View to Canada’s Parliament
Tuesday, April 9, 2013
Today, Canada’s capital opens its doors to Google Maps. From the floor of the House of Commons and the Red Chamber of the Senate, to the Library of Parliament and the Prime Minister’s Office, the Street View Trolley is making its way through the hallowed halls of
Parliament
, mapping this iconic landmark of Canadian history and culture for all Canadians to enjoy and explore.
The Google Maps Trolley collects Street View imagery of Canada's House of Commons
Through the main doors of Parliament, Google Maps users will be able to virtually walk down the Hall of Honour, visit the Memorial Chamber and take the elevator to the top of the Peace Tower. Or, hang a left in Confederation Hall and stroll past portraits of Canada’s former Prime Ministers to the foyer of the House of Commons, where the media
scrum
MPs and Ministers before going into the House.
Parliament stands at the heart of our democracy. Through these images, people across the world will be able to see the places where our laws are debated and the chambers where Senators and Members come together to represent every Canadian. Users will have behind-the-scenes access to tour working offices and explore the iconic
art
, architecture and history of an institution that serves as the backdrop for Canadian politics.
The Trolley in the Hall of Honour, Centre Block
We appreciate the support of the Offices of the
Prime Minister of Canada
, the
Speaker of the House of Commons
, the
Speaker of the Senate of Canada
and the
Library of Parliament
, all of whom made this project possible.
Stay tuned for the launch of the Parliament Hill imagery in Google Maps in the coming months!
The Trolley tours the Library of Parliament
About Street View and the Trolley
Google Maps and
Street View
lets you explore places around the world through 360-degree street-level imagery, offering you the opportunity to virtually travel the streets of
Toronto
, the
Ski Slopes of Whistler
and the chilly tundra of
Canada's Arctic
.
To take Street View technology indoors, we developed a small push-cart, lovingly dubbed
Trolley
. It has been used in places such as galleries and museums with minimal disruption and ensuring the safety of all exhibits. The Trolley is outfitted with a few components that are key to collecting indoor imagery: a panoramic camera to collect 360-degree views, motion sensors to track Trolley’s position, a hard drive to store data, and an onboard computer to operate the system. With this adapted equipment, we were able to gather imagery and bring it into Google Maps. You can now drag ‘Pegman’ directly onto fascinating places like the
Metropolitan Museum of Art
in New York City and the
White House
.
Aside from Parliament Hill, Canadians will soon have the opportunity to visit the interiors of other Canadian landmarks, from Calgary's Saddledome and BC Place, to the historic battlements of Quebec City and Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum.

Google Currents in Canada: Scan through your favourite categories, editions and breaking Canadian news
Wednesday, March 27, 2013
Keeping up on the news out there can be overwhelming. That's where
Google Currents
comes in—an app that allows you to discover, share and read your favourite news outlets, blogs and online magazines (what we together refer to as “editions”) on your smartphone or tablet—even when you’re offline.
Today, we’re bringing Canadian publications to Currents. We have great editions from publications like The
Toronto Star
,
CBC
,
iVillage Canada
,
Canada.com
, and
Cottage Life
. You can scan through all your favourite categories and specific editions with just the swipe of a finger. And, we use some of the technology behind Search to bring you breaking stories on those celebrity scandals, news that shakes the business world, or latest and greatest sports moments.
Scan through categories
Keep track of your existing subscriptions and discover new ones grouping editions into categories. Check out editions related to your interests through categories like Entertainment, Sports, Lifestyle and more. All of your content will be grouped in these categories, accessible from a sidebar. And you can organize your editions in each category with favourites on top.
It’s easy to quickly browse through top articles from all your favourite editions in a category—just swipe horizontally. If you subscribe to more than a dozen News editions like
The Toronto Star
,
Huffington Post Canada
and
CBC News
, you can quickly swipe through the entire category and dive into editions with articles of interest.
Scan through editions
We’ve also made it easier to scan headlines in a particular edition—just swipe vertically. Want to see what’s new in
CBC Sports
news? Just swipe through through the headlines. After you view a story we’ll mark it as read, so it’s easier to see new content each time you use Currents.
Scan through breaking stories
To help you stay up-to-date with the latest news, Google Currents uses some of the technology behind Search to deliver the hottest breaking stories in categories such as World, Entertainment, Sports, Science and more. You’ll find new articles from hot topics that interest you, while discovering existing Currents editions you can subscribe to. Breaking stories are customized to Canada —so we’ll only show you relevant news.
Read in your preferred language
To help you enjoy content in your preferred language, we’ve integrated
Google Translate
into Google Currents. Just press the globe icon while reading an edition, and you can automatically translate that edition to one of 38 supported languages.
Currents optimizes editions to look great on whatever type of device you're using. Articles shine, with large images and layouts that are intelligently optimized for your device, whether you're on a phone or a tablet.
Millions of people around the world have downloaded Currents, reading over
700 publisher editions
and tens of thousands of self-produced editions. The updated app is available for
download
on Google Play and
iOS
. Finally, if you’re an international publisher you can use
Google Currents Producer
to add local content for people in Canada and the other countries where Currents is available. You can even enable auto-translation and choose in which countries you want your content available.
We hope that today’s updates make keeping up with the latest news fast, easy and fun no matter where you are or what device you’re using.

Thursday, March 21, 2013
Have you ever wanted to explore the art world without having to travel far and wide? Or to have a particular piece of art in front of you to talk about and share when you’re miles from where you saw it?
Google Art Project
is a unique online platform for museums from across the world letting visitors inside their doors and into their galleries with a little help from technology. People across the world who might otherwise never see the real thing, are accessing masterpieces, antiquities and other artifacts that are part of our cultural heritage, and the program continues to expand.
Today Google Art Project
announced that nearly 2,000 new works
are being added to
Google Art Project
from 29 new partners across 15 countries, including Canada’s own

Canada Council Art Bank
from Ottawa and has the largest collection of contemporary Canadian art in the world.. Both museums contributed a beautiful collection of Canadian art and artifacts and sculptures to be explored and learn about Canadian historical heritage, culture and beauty. Artists such as
Jean Claude Dupont
,
George Munro Grant
,
Meryl McMaster
,
Michael Snow
, and many others.

Bringing Chromebooks Home
Wednesday, March 20, 2013
Yesterday the Chrome team took a big step to
expand Chromebooks to Canada
, and
5 other countries
. We're very excited in Google Kitchener-Waterloo. We've been working on Chrome OS for a while and now our family and friends can experience
Chromebooks
too.
Chromebooks are fantastic, we use them for just about everything both at work and at home: emailing, sharing and collaborating on Google Docs; and surfing and reading sites on the web. I came to Google to work on Chrome and its been very fun. The team here started working on Chrome as 20% project and we have now become a big integral part of the global Chrome team.
We're really looking forward to see how Canadians will use Chromebooks. Its very motivating to know that people all over the world will see and use the work we've done here in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Trekker takes on Canada’s Arctic Winter
Wednesday, March 20, 2013
Editor’s Note: Today's guest author is Chris Kalluk, a resident of the Nunavut territory and mapping expert at
Nunavut Tunngavik
, the nonprofit organization we’re working with to collect imagery and build more comprehensive maps of the Canadian Arctic.
There’s a saying we have in the north: unless you’re the lead sled dog, the view is pretty much the same. Today, I’m wearing a Street View
Trekker
- a backpack outfitted with a camera system - and walking the streets of
Iqaluit
, ready to explore Canada’s incredible Arctic and putting you at the front of the pack.
Here, in the capital of Canada’s Arctic territory of Nunavut, the average temperature is below freezing eight months of the year. The roads are covered in snow, the bay is frozen and polar bear sightings are a frequent occurrence. Winter up here is a way of life. And the only way to truly understand it is to see it for yourself.
Chris Kalluk, Nunavut resident, hiking the streets of Iqaluit with the Trekker
This is the first Trekker expedition in Canada for Google Maps. I’m wearing the backpack to collect Street View imagery as I walk to the shore of Frobisher Bay, where the wind is the strongest and you can see the tide piling up mountains of sea ice. On the way I’ll pass sled dogs tied up outside houses, yapping in anticipation of their next trip. And I may stop to check out an igloo, built by Inuit craftsmen using methods passed down over a millennia.
As part of its commitment to build a comprehensive and accurate map of Canada’s north, Google visited my home,
Cambridge Bay
, last August and published
imagery of the trip
that fall. But this visit to Iqaluit marks the first time the Google Maps team has ventured into an Arctic climate during the winter months, where average temperatures can dip below -30°C [-25°F].
Raleigh Seamster, Project Lead for Google Maps, surveys Iqaluit while collecting Street View imagery with the Trekker
At the end of the day, when it’s time to warm up, our community will gather around two dozen computers at the local library to conduct a
MapUp workshop
. I’ll work with Iqaluit’s elders, local business owners, political leaders and high school students to show them how we can use
Google Map Maker
to add the streets, shops and points of interest - those places that make Iqaluit home - to Google Maps.
Hiking Iqaluit with the Trekker and working as a community to make the map more complete offers us a unique opportunity to share our people’s land and culture with the rest of the world. And, in just a few months, when the Street View panoramas become available on Google Maps, you’ll have a chance to virtually walk these snowy streets for yourself. I like to think of it as our chance to give you the lead sled dog’s view.
